STS-27, Orbiter Atlantis, Liftoff

Space Shuttle Atlantis takes flight on its STS-27 mission on December 2, 1988, 9:30 a.m. EST, utilizing 375,000 pounds thrust produced by its three main engines. The STS-27 was the third classified mission dedicated to the Department of Defense (DoD). After completion of mission, Orbiter Atlantis landed December 6, 1988, 3:36 p.m. PST at Edwards Air Force Base, California

Atlantis, STS-117 Launch + 3:40
The exhaust trail shifting northward and towards us in the breeze. It was striking and cast some amazing shadows (the diagonal on the right). The scale is somewhat lost here - it was still >3 miles from us. Atlantis by this point was a very small point of light that everyone else was still watching, but I didn't want to miss this image so I swapped lenses for a quick shot.
Launch pad 39B is visible on the far left as the cloud moved towards it. 39A from which Atlantis launched is just right of center.

Solid Rocket Boosters separate as Space Shuttle Atlantis powers towards orbit. Look for the three bright spots at the end of the contrail.

Space Shuttle Discovery and its crew of seven astronauts lift off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, beginning the STS-116 mission to the International Space Station. This is Discovery's 33rd mission and the first night launch since 2003.

This is a Photo Essay about Briny Breezes, a small retirement community of trailers located...at the beach on the EAST coast of South Florida. Given the state of our planet and the United States lack of prepardeness in the event of previous emergencies...Brownie excluded...I thought I'd repost this story. It was originally shot in the SUmmer of 2000 I believe for a workshop I was doing with Sarah Leen at the Palm Beach Photographic Workshops in Del Ray Beach. Due to developers influence and the fast approaching Hurricane season it may all be gone soon.
This photo is of the Space Shuttle lauching up coast and over the Clubhouse on the beach.

Launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-66 as viewed from the VIP site at the Kennedy Space Center. I worked at the Payload Operations Control Center and other locations at KSC over the duration of this project. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the return landing of this mission as the shuttle was diverted to Edwards Air Force Base in California due to high winds and rain caused by Tropical Storm Gordon. It sure was a beautiful day for a launch, however.

Dug this one out of the archives - dawn launch of Atlantis (~6:10am) on May 19th 2000, mission STS-101. This was another ISS assembly mission. Taken from the banks of the Banana River at Titusville, with a Canon EOS 500N film camera, & digitised from the negative using a film scanner.
