ROSEMARY KERKAY - 2nd place - entry 37265 - Title: Beyond Repair - ST. PAUL, US
This series depicts the grim situation after Hurricane Katrina hit the coastline of southern Mississippi a year after the storm. This project is my attempt at showing not only the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, but also the lack of aid toward the region and the painfully slow, if not stagnant, recovery process.

KEIKO HIROMI - 3rd place - entry 36908 - Title: Monadnock Street - DORCHESTER, US

Other
LUNG LIU - 1st place - Title: The Downtown Eastside #3 - SURREY, CA
This is a series of portraits of the Vancouver downtown eastside, Canada’s poorest neighbourhood. They were taken mainly in the fall of 2006 and are intended to be a portrait of the community itself. Throughout the years, this neighbourhood has suffered from many challenges which include, but are not limited to, drug addiction, poverty, diseases such as HIV and hepatitis, prostitution, governmental and societal indifference, and a terrifyingly prolific serial killer. There is a real sense of warmth and community that still remains despite all its problems.

Photo Essay
LUNG LIU - 1st place - Title: Abandoned - SURREY, CA
The Salton Sea was once a destination to the stars in its heyday, but now lies abandoned and neglected. Yet in its neglection lies the beauty found in the quiet of its death and decay. Many see this area as an eyesore, unable to see past the deterioration of its ruins, but it is exactly the deterioration along with nature's efforts to reclaim her land that makes this place so heart-breaking in its beauty.

MINDY TAN HUIMIN - 2nd place - Title: When sports is more than how fast you can run - SINGAPORE, SG
This series of photographs was shot at the Manila Para Games 2005 - a sports meet for athletes either born with defects or met with accidents later in their lives. It's not about how fast they can run, or who gets the medal. The opportunity to get out of their hometowns and villages, and the courage to brave life, is a triumph of adversity, not measurable by tangibles.

SUSAN BOWEN - 3rd place - Title: Gleason's Gym, Group of Four - BROOKLYN, US
